2013 Photo-a-day: April Week 3

Day 15 - Star hands

Day 15 – Star hands

This is another image I saw on the web and wanted to try. I think ideally you would use 5 different people with similar sized hands, but I did it with my husband and 2 older kids. I laid on the ground and shot straight up while they held their hands above me so I could get the blue sky in the background. It’s not a perfect star, but I love how it came out.

Day 16 - Dancing with Daddy feet

Day 16 – Dancing with Daddy feet

My daughter trying to dance standing on Daddy’s feet. What more can I say? :)

Day 17 - Sibling hands

Day 17 – Sibling hands

This is one of my favorite shots of the month so far. We did it outside to get nice light. The two older kids put their hands down first, then my husband held the baby over them and lowered his hand onto the top. I had to get to shot quickly as he almost immediately took his hand off again! A quick conversion to black and white gave it a lovely finish.

Day 18 - Mommy and me feet

Day 18 – Mommy and me feet

This is another one of those pictures that started with me trying to get something completely different. I wanted a shot of Evan’s feet sticking out in front of him, so that his feet were in focus but the rest of him was slightly blurred, so that he feet were the main focus of the picture. I discovered though that his legs aren’t long enough to give enough distance between his feet and his body to get the effect I wanted. So I’ll save that shot for one of the other kids. Instead I just started trying to get a cute shot of his feet, and I put one of mine in to show the difference in size. Result? Cute shot :)

Day 19 - Wet feet

Day 19 – Wet feet

My son’s preschool class went on a nature hike to a local creek, and I knew that would be a good opportunity to get some nice shots. They had a lot of fun wading in the shallow water, throwing stones and trying to catch something with their nets.

Day 20 - Holding hands

Day 20 – Holding hands

This is another shot from the nature hike. The kids had to hold an adult’s hand while we walked on the street, and my son chose to hold his teacher’s hand. He adores his teacher, and she was been wonderful with him this year, very patient and adapting to his needs. The original shot had their whole bodies in, and when I cropped in on their hands I lost some quality in the image. I still like it though.

Day 21 - Soccer feet

Day 21 – Soccer feet

My son again! He just started a 12 week soccer class, and he loves it! I’m not sure if he’s any good yet, but as this shot shows, at least he can kick the ball! I used my 50mm-200mm lens on full zoom to get in as close as I could on his feet from the sidelines.

2013 Photo-a-day: April Week 2

Day 98 - Hungry hands

Day 98 – Hungry hands

This was a spur of the moment shot. I was downloading some other pictures from my camera onto my computer, and Evan was laying happily on the floor sucking on some watermelon. I noticed how cute his hands looked as he fed himself, and grabbed a shot. I used the widest aperture I could so his face is just a little out of focus, to draw attention to the hands which are the true subject of the photo. Also, I love how his little pinky finger is up – so sophisticated!

Day 99 - 100 days hands!

Day 99 – Furry feet

My kitty-cat’s lovely soft paws, for something a little different :)

100 days hands!

100 days hands!

Can you believe we’re already 100 days into 2013? I used my two older kids to make me a ‘100’ with their hands :)

Day 101 - Happy feet

Day 101 – Happy feet

My kids again – feet this time obviously! They loved doing this. They couldn’t stop giggling when I was trying to draw the faces on!

Day 102 - Arty hands

Day 102 – Arty hands

This was another fun one, and one that will be lovely to keep for years to come. I let the two older kids choose which color they wanted. Evan was a little tricky, as he doesn’t like opening his hands very much, so getting the paint on, then getting him to open his hands and put them on the paper was a challenge. A messy challenge! I love the result though.

Day 103 - Running feet

Day 103 – Running feet

My daughter had a fun run at her school to raise money to improve their technology. I managed to get a nice shot of her running for this project. In the original photo the focus wasn’t quite right, the grass just behind her foot was sharper than her sneaker. So I had to sharpen her foot and blur the grass to get the correct look.

Day 104 - Butterfly feet

Day 104 – Butterfly feet

I saw this on the web when I was looking for ideas, and definitely wanted to try it. Another fun paint project that the kids loved doing. I didn’t bother trying to get Evan’s feet though, I thought that would be just too much work!

2013 Photo-a-day: April Week 1

This month’s theme is ‘Hands and Feet.’ Let’s get into it!

Day 90 - Tiny fingers and toes

Day 90 – Tiny fingers and toes

I was planning to get a picture of my baby sucking on his toes for my first shot this month, something he loves to do. This time, however, he thought the whole thing was just too funny and was too busy laughing. I did manage to get this cute shot of his little fingers and toes though. I’ll try again for the toe sucking shot later in the month :)

Day 92 - My hands

Day 92 – My hands

My hands are many things: Daughter hands. Sister hands. Wife hands. Mother hands. Friend hands.

Day 93 - Monkey hands

Day 93 – Monkey hands

It’s Spring Break, so we headed to the park with some friends. I love this shot of them hanging like monkeys on the bars :)

Day 94 - Sandy feet

Day 94 – Sandy feet

My two boys were playing in the sandbox, so I had to get a shot of their sandy toes.

Day 95 - Busy hands

Day 95 – Busy hands

My son LOVES his train track. He usually asks me to put it together, but he likes to help.

Day 96 - Petting hands

Day 96 – Petting hands

My son again. He adores our kitty, and she is very tolerant of him. They have been close friends since he was born.

Day 97 - Sunshiny feet

Day 97 – Sunshiny feet

My feet! I was hanging out in the back yard while the boys played, and I wanted to get a shot of my feet ‘relaxing.’ I tried shooting them just laying in the grass, then I laid down and put them up in the air. I loved the silhouette I got against the late afternoon sun. Then I got this shot of the sun peeking through the gap between my toes, and it quickly became one of my favorites!

2013 Photo-a-day: February Week 4

Day 53

Day 53

Love hearts, a traditional Valentine’s treat. I went outside so I could shoot these in natural light, and tried to arrange them so they looked like they had been casually dropped.

Day 54

Day 54

We’ve had some beautiful weather lately, so I decided to take advantage of it to get this shot. I love the heart shape of these leaves, and the shadow looks great too. To get the shot I had to hold the leaf in such a way that you could clearly see the heart shape of it and the shadow, as well as keeping my hand and the stalk out of the frame as much as possible. I actually tried cropping my fingers out completely, but that made it look like the leaf was floating, and looked a little weird.

Day 55

Day 55

My littlest love is ready for solid food! We’re taking it slowly, and on the advice of a friend we are letting him try things for himself rather than trying to force-spoonfeed him. I offered him some tomato flavored corn chip puff thingies, and he loved them! Although so far he prefers to suck them and then spit out the rest. It’s exciting to wonder what foods he will come to love though :)

Day 56

Day 56

This was an interesting shot, and not what I originally planned this day. I wanted to get a shot of the Chinese symbol for love, but in an interesting way. I also wanted to get a shot of the beautiful cherry blossom which had just started blooming, but couldn’t think of a way that it represented ‘love.’ So I decided to use the blossom to create the Chinese symbol for love. I printed out a large copy of it, then gathered some blossom and stuck it to the paper. My kids helped. It was fun, but we got a little ‘blossom happy,’ and by the end it was very hard to see the symbol at all, it just looked like a mass of blossom on white paper! So I came up with a plan B – I got a nice shot of the blossom and superimposed the symbol over the top. Although it was not what I originally wanted, I like the effect I ended up with.

Day 57

Day 57

My three little loves, also known as the Triple-E ;)  I wanted to get a shot of them together during my love-theme month, because the love between siblings is like no other. Edward looks up to his big sister, and Elizabeth is very protective of her brothers. Edward and Elizabeth both adore their baby brother, and Evan lights up whenever they’re around. I know the three of them will be best friends for life. I originally planned to shoot them sitting up together, as I have done before. I put them all in their ‘sibling shirts’ and got a couple of good shots of them sitting on the tiger blanket out in the backyard. Then I decided to to lay them down and try and get their heads close together. It was unplanned, but I loved those shots so much more that the sitting up ones! They just look so much more relaxed and happy, and I like that their heads are close together. You can’t see their shirts as well, but I don’t mind that. I love this picture so much I’m going to print it and frame it :)

Day 58

Day 58

Showing my body some love by getting out and walking more. I try and walk every day after I drop my daughter off at school, and I also just signed up to walk a 5K in a couple of weeks. I hope to run it next year. Right now I don’t have enough time to train, but as Evan gets older and Edward moves into Kindergarten my schedule will open up a little.

Day 59

Day 59

I started the month with my wedding rings, and I end it with my wedding dress. Every bride knows how important it is to find the perfect dress for the day she promises to love her husband for all eternity. I had mine custom made, and I loved it. My husband said he did too. It’s been hanging in my closet wrapped in plastic for the last 8 years, so it was fun to get it out again. I took it outside so I could get some nice soft natural light for the shot.

And that’s February done! I had a lot of fun with this month’s theme of ‘love,’ and next month should be even funner…the theme for March is ‘Famous Movies Recreated with Tiny Action Figures!’ A bit of a mouthful, but I’m so looking forward to this one! I have my team assembled (see below) and we are taking suggestions. Just leave a comment if there is a movie you’d like to see recreated with tiny action figures :)

Ready for action!

2013 Photo-a-day: February Week 2

Day 39

Day 39

My husband, the love of my life. It was his birthday, and we had dinner with friends. He had already blown the candle out when I took the picture, so I copied a flame from another photo and added it digitally.

Day 40

Day 40

My daughter after participating in Girl Scout’s Thinking Day. This was a day where each troop had a booth to display information about different countries and cultures around the world. It teaches the girls to understand, appreciate and love the diversity of our world.

Day 41

Day 41

One of the cutest little girls on the planet :)  This is the daughter of our good friends, and we were invited to celebrate her first birthday with her. First birthdays are so special, especially when surrounded by people who love you. And cupcakes :)

Day 42

Day 42

My husband bought me this necklace for Christmas a few years ago. I can’t think of a better explanation of the bond between child and mother. As you can see it has been well-worn. To get this image I hung the necklace over the top of my jewelry box with the lid up and shot with my macro lens. There is a mirror inside the lid, so I tried to get the other side of the pendant reflected in the mirror, but I couldn’t get enough depth of field to get it in focus. So instead I switched to a shallow depth of field to completely blur out the background, then just added a second shot of the other side in the corner. I converted the image to sepia for a nice finish.

Day 43

Day 43

Evan, my littlest love. 5 months old in this picture! He’s not quite sitting up yet, so I tipped the chair he’s sitting in back a little to prevent him falling forward. Then I just started shooting, capturing all his funny expressions and poses :)

Day 44

Day 44

“For God so loved the world…” Ash Wednesday. We went as a family to mass in the evening. By the time we got home the kids had already rubbed their crosses off, but my husband’s was still clear.

Day 45

Day 45

Happy Valentine’s Day! Once I got the idea for this shot in my head, I had to do it. These aren’t real roses, they’re fabric ones we were given just after the birth of our first son. But I think with the softening filter I added you can’t really tell.

2013 Photo-a-day: January Week 4

Day 22

Day 22

I wanted something that represented how the evenings get dark early in the winter. I tried shooting the porch light, but it didn’t grab me. So instead I shot one of the solar night lights in our back yard. I took the picture shortly after they came on, so there was still enough light to see the background, but you get the impression that evening has arrived.

Day 23

Day 23

Winter brings rain. I had a few options for this (puddles, rain falling, splashes), but I went with this. I shot it through my car windshield, and I love how the raindrops are clear and sharp but the background is completely unrecognizable. The picture was so monochromatic that it already looked black and white, but I converted it anyway to bring out the contrast.

Day 24

Day 24

There’s nothing quite like snuggling up in a warm blanket on a cold night (or day). These are just a few of the many  we have around the house.

Day 25

Day 25

I love to read, and I love books. Unfortunately I have a bad habit of buying more than I have time to read. Cold, rainy days are prefect for catching up though.

Day 26

Day 26

It’s a hot water bottle. With a fluffy cover. Cold bed? Not anymore. Yes, I know it’s not a very exciting photo, but it was getting towards the end of the month, and I was running out of ideas!

Day 27

Day 27

I don’t smoke, but I’m told it can warm you up. My husband likes the occasional pipe or cigar.

Day 28

Day 28

Our back yard is covered with leaves. Not the lovely red, orange and yellow ones you see on the ground in the fall, but dead, brown ones. I took this on a sunny day, and added a layer in Photoshop to give the leaves a glow. I really like the effect.

Day 29

Day 29

In the summer we eschew socks, but in the winter we like cozy toes. These are my kids’ feet. I tried several different angles for the shot – all in a line, looking down on them, laying down – but because the baby’s feet are so much smaller nothing looked right. Then we tried this, and it worked great.

Day 30

Day 30

This’ll warm you on a chilly winter day. Confession – there’s no soup in that bowl. It wasn’t lunchtime, so I filled the bowl with boiling water. I put it in front of a black background to try and make the steam stand out. It didn’t work as well as I’d hoped, but it’s not bad.

Day 31

Day 31

Let’s end the month with a little cuteness! My baby, in his snuggly warm pajamas.

So, one month gone in 2013 already. How was your January? I struggled a little with this theme. February’s theme is ‘Love,’ and I think I can do a lot more with that, so I’m looking forward to it.
